Keeping Pets Healthy & Fit for an Active Life

Adult Pet Care at Spencer Animal Hospital

Generally, cats and dogs are considered to be "adult" after their first birthday. With that biological milestone come changes in their health care needs. Some pet owners believe that once a furry family member passes the kitten or puppy stage, all he or she needs are annual vaccinations. The truth is, adult animals are still susceptible to many of the same illnesses and diseases that affect younger pets.

At Spencer Animal Hospital, we recommend adult patients receive a thorough wellness exam once a year. More frequent visits may be needed for patients with chronic conditions, including those on special prescription diets and medications.

Each preventive exam will include a complete physical, including a thorough review of your pet’s external appearance, including his or her skin, eyes, ears, nose, muscles, and bones. We will also feel for any unusual lumps or bumps, listen to the heart and lungs, and check to see if there are any physical or behavioral cues indicating discomfort or potential disease.

Annual checkups also include intestinal parasite screening, heartworm testing, blood work, a dental examination, vaccination update, and discussion about nutrition, behavior, and any pet owner concerns.
